The COSMOS-standard AISBL* is a not-for-profit, international association registered in Belgium.  It was set up to own, manage and develop the COSMOS-standard as an international (and internationally accepted) standard for organic and natural cosmetics.

Physically processed agro-ingredients – may be plant, animal or microbial origin but no GMOs, no critically endangered species, only products of (not a part of) animals;

Chemically processed agro-ingredients – same as above, and the chemical treatments must respect the principles of Green Chemistry with the resulting ingredients complying with strict limitations of toxicity and biodegradability;

Companies must also ensure their packaging is minimised and is environmentally friendly and they must have an environmental and waste management plan for their factories.

Dermatest is a German dermatology laboratory that researches and evaluates cosmetic products by applying dermatological and scientific methods, with the aim of rendering them safer in use and more measurable and readily comparable in their efficacy.

EWG offers its mark as an easily identifiable way to ensure personal care products meet the EWG's strict health criteria. Before a company can use EWG VERIFIED™ on products, the company must show they fully disclose the products' ingredients on their labels or packiging, they do not contain EWG ingredients of concern, and are made with good manufacturing practices, among the criteria.

• Products cannot contain any ingredients on EWG's "Unacceptable" list, meaning ingredients with health, ecotoxicity and/or contamination concerns.
• Products must fully disclose all ingredients, including ingredients used in "fragrance". 
• Product manufacturers must develop and follow current good manufacturing practices to further ensure the safety of their products.
